Description:

Thankfully I was riding slowly and there were no cars travelling behind me. The man swung his door quicky and fully open, and despite my wide, quick swerve, he connected with my handlebar. I was knocked down into the center lane. I received a scraped knee and thumb, so I was very, very lucky.

The driver was apologetic and made sure I was ok. He said he assumed there was no one coming so he opened his door. I asked him to promise to think about how serious the consequences could have been. I also asked that he start opening the driver's side door with his right hand because it would have forced his body and head to turn towards the road, meaning he would have seen me coming.
